 Getting started

Welcome to our third newsletter in which we focus on the learning environment and studying at Queen Mary. In case you missed it:

 Library and study spaces

Access and opening times

Whitechapel Library holds medical and dental material, and West Smithfield Library holds medical material, both with outstanding resources for undergraduate students. The large multidisciplinary Mile End Library is also available to you 24 hours a day during term time. Opening times for the libraries can be found here. Visit the Library website for more information on our library services.

Study spaces

As well as the libraries, you can make use of a range of study spaces across our campuses. Check out where our current students told us their favourite study spots are. As a Queen Mary student, you also have access to a number of other libraries off campus.

Digital resources

IT access information

Keep an eye out for an email with information on your Queen Mary IT account details. Please remember to check junk folders in case it gets sent there. These details will be required to access IT services at Queen Mary, including your PC user account, emails and QMplus, the online learning environment.

QMplus

QMplus is Queen Mary’s online learning environment and is used by your school or institute to provide detailed information about your course and specific modules.

 Study skills

Self-directed learning

Self-directed learning is an important part of university-level study. It involves taking responsibility for your own learning, identifying your own learning goals and strategies, finding your own study resources and engaging in independent study – this refers to the time you spend working outside of lecture and seminar hours, including background reading, essay writing, preparation for seminars and tutorials, and so on. The Learning Development team offers practical guidance that will contribute to your academic success at Queen Mary. The Advice and Counselling Service also has some great advice on the transition to academic life in the UK.

You can hear from our students about the transition to university in this short film.

Study support services

There are a number of study support services at Queen Mary to help you study well at university, including support from Learning Development, the Peer Assisted Study Support (PASS) scheme and the Language Centre's in-sessional modules to help you maximise your academic performance.

Expanding your skills and networks

Study abroad

Queen Mary has a number of partnerships with prestigious universities around the world, giving you the opportunity to spend up to two semesters abroad. Check out the Global Opportunities pages for information on the International Exchange Programme, Erasmus+ and various summer programmes.
