Welcome to our second newsletter focusing on money and support. In case you missed it:

Tuition fees       

You will need to pay at least 50 per cent of your tuition fees before your on-campus enrolment in September. A guide for how to pay tuition fees is available here.

Bursaries and extra funding

We have a significant package of bursaries and scholarships available to eligible students to ensure access for all and to reward excellence. The Financial Assistance Fund may also be available to you if you are facing financial hardship during your studies, depending on your circumstances.

Funding your studies

The Advice and Counselling Service has detailed Tier 4 visa application guidance, as well as information about travel in and out of the UK, working in the UK, police registration, money and opening a bank account, and lots of other practicalities.

As a Queen Mary student, you can take advantage of deals and discounts both on and off campus, including IT equipment and software, travel, shopping, and food and drink.

Finding work experience and part-time work 

You can use the Careers and Enterprise Service to find work experience opportunities, as well as part-time work and internships. They can also support you with job applications, interview training and starting your own business. It's never too early (or too late) to start working to improve your prospects!

Working in the UK

If you have Tier 4 (General) Student immigration permission, check the Advice and Counselling Service's guidance on working in the UK.

Moving on to university and living independently can be a big step, but we have strong support networks in place and plenty of advice to help you make this transition.

Queen Mary support services are here to help you live well at university, including support for when you are experiencing difficulties in your personal life and finances, and help for students with disabilities, specific learning difficulties and mental health issues.

Health

You should make sure to register with a doctor as soon as you arrive.

GP surgeries will normally register all international students in the UK, regardless of the length of your programme. Please visit the student health website for more information about the UK’s healthcare service and how non-UK students can access it.

International (non-EU) students on a programme of study longer than six months must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge 
when making their Tier 4 visa application. If your programme of study is less than six months, please visit the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website for specific 
information.

Protecting your health

We advise you to get immunised against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) in your home country before arriving at Queen Mary, and meningitis (MenACWY) if you are 25 and under. If you have not been vaccinated by the time you arrive, please make an appointment as soon as you have registered with a GP surgery in the UK where you can get immunised for free.
