Queen Mary to host two US students on prestigious scholarship
Marshall Scholarships are among the most prestigious scholarships awarded to US students, with only 43 places available across the country.

New ‘Science Alive’ videos showcase lab skills
Dr Rosemary Clyne from the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences has created a collection of videos called ‘Science Alive’, featuring Queen Mary students demonstrating lab techniques that they use in their research. Check out the first in the collection featuring third-year PhD student Samuel Brod.

Five Queen Mary PhD students to compete in this year’s QMUL Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition
Taqi Abrar (EECS), Zoë McGee (SED), Satya Mouland (CCLS), Esteban Ortega Hernandez (SEMS) and Muhammad Sami Siddiqui (EECS) will all be competing at the final this Friday.
They will have just three minutes to tell a non-specialist audience about their research and results, and all students are invited to vote for the People’s Choice Winner by auto-enrolling on the 3MT QMplus page.

QTemps provides the platform for you to gain work experience and develop the skills needed to thrive in the workplace through their temporary roles. They offer a range of diverse positions at any given time and regularly recruit for tutors, service desk analysts, administrators, E-learning assistants and more. Applications now open for the summer round of QMentoring – deadline this Friday

As a mentee, you will have the opportunity to receive careers support on a one-to-one basis from an experienced professional, from June to September 2018. Your mentor will help you to make better-informed career choices, develop your employability skills, and improve your confidence when applying for graduate roles. Interested in a career in communications, PR or marketing?

The Internal Engagement team is looking for a student to attend the CASE Student Communications conference, alongside a number of higher education communications colleagues, in central London on Tuesday 12 June. You would need to be available to talk informally with delegates over the lunch break about communication issues you have encountered at Queen Mary, and to speak about how university communicators can improve their student communication provision. Hear from young people on starting their own business

Queen Mary students are being offered free entry to My Startup Story 2018, a lively evening chat with a panel of inspirational young founders sharing their startup stories to inspire young people to turn their innovative ideas into reality. The event will take place on Wednesday 13 June at WeWork Aldwych. You will need to use the code ‘Students18’ when registering here, and also bring your student ID card on the day.

Open Iftar at the Mile End campus

Are you at the Mile End campus studying until late? Take a short break and have some free food during the Open Iftar (fast-breaking meal) events taking place at sunset in Library Square on Thursday 24 May (9.02pm) and Thursday 31 May (9.10pm). Everyone is welcome. Check out this advice from the NHS on fasting safely and keeping yourself healthy, especially during the exam period.

Tell us about your housing and win prizes, including a Brompton bike

The University of London is carrying out a survey to help them better understand student housing needs and improve the help they can offer. The survey is open to all students living in London, whether you’re living in private rented housing, halls of residence or at home. All those that take part will be entered into a prize draw. The first prize will be a Brompton bike, and there will be three runner-up prizes of £200 Amazon vouchers. The survey should take no more than five minutes to complete and you can access it here until Friday 15 June.

Dissertation reading retreat for masters students

Learning Development is running dedicated retreats for masters students who want to focus the reading for their dissertation. These free, one-day workshops will cover strategies for reading critically, improving your note-taking skills and integrating your readings into your work. The retreats take place on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 June and can be booked online.

Nunnery Gallery 2018 autumn exhibition call for submissions

Queen Mary became a Patron of Bow Arts Trust and the Nunnery Gallery in 2017, and since then we have commissioned an artist to make a site-specific piece of art for the Mile End campus as part of their autumn exhibition. The artist commissioned last year was Maxima Smith who made ‘Ode to a Window Cleaner’, a video installation that was projected onto the windows of the People’s Palace. We have now launched a new call for submissions to apply for the Queen Mary commission of this year’s Nunnery Gallery 2018 autumn exhibition. Find out more.
