Student profile: United Nations Association 

Wednesday 24 October is United Nations Day, marking the anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter and the founding of the United Nations. If you were a student at Queen Mary last year, you will have received an email yesterday with a link to complete the survey online. There are workshops on overcoming study block, building self-confidence, improving sleep, and managing exam and everyday stress, anxiety and depression.

Access your official Queen Mary Status Letter electronically

All fully enrolled undergraduate (except MBBS and BDS programmes), taught postgraduate, associate and pre-sessional students will now be issued with a digitally signed electronic Status Letter via Gradintelligence, the service providers of the HEAR (Higher Education Achievement Report). The Status Letter can be used as a confirmation of enrolment, certificate of attendance and confirmation of address. Remember to check your Queen Mary emails for the Gradintelligence activation email in order to access this service. Find out more.

Winter graduation registration deadline extended


The winter graduation ceremony is available to view at qmul.ac.uk/graduation. Bookings for individual ceremonies will be open until noon on Thursday 1 November. If you're looking forward to your own graduation day, take a look at our highlights video from this summer's ceremonies.

British Summer Time ends this Sunday, 28 October


Remember to put your clocks back an hour this Sunday, 28 October as the UK reverts from British Summer Time (BST) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). This means that it will be lighter in the mornings, but will start getting darker earlier in the evening. Information on how to keep safe on and off campus is available on My.QMUL.

Jobs and careers

FOSTEM (focus on science, technology, engineering and maths) careers events

FOSTEM is a programme of events running from Monday 22 October to Thursday 1 November that explores the different career opportunities in these fields. There will be skills-based workshops, panel discussions and employer presentations. The Science and Technology Fair on Monday 29 October will demonstrate the range of opportunities available, from placements and internships to graduate roles.

Would you like to work with us to improve the student experience at Queen Mary?

We are offering a number of paid part-time student research internships to help us gather student experiences and recommendations on the issues of curriculum inclusivity and diversity, BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) student attainment, student retention, and commuting students. This forms part of our Going for Gold initiative to ensure we provide the best education and student experience. Pay is £10.43 an hour, and you will be required to work four to seven hours a week in term time, spread flexibly around your availability between November 2018 and April 2019. Apply by 5pm tomorrow, Wednesday 24 October.


Take part in the Hult Prize 2019 for a chance to win $1m for your social start-up

The Hult Prize – the 'Nobel Prize of student entrepreneurship' – is now open for 2019 entries. Lead coach Dr Evangelos Markopoulos is looking for five teams of three to four people to take part. All students at all levels are welcome to apply.

Looking to improve your employability or get an insight into different graduate employers?

The QConsult programme involves a team of students working together to conduct a research or consultancy project on behalf of a charity or business. The QTaster programme allows you to learn about different sectors and roles by visiting and networking with graduate employers.

Mayor of London entrepreneurial competition

Do you have a business idea that can improve the city we live in? The Mayor’s Entrepreneur competition is looking for smart business ideas focusing on one of three awards in ‘the environment’, ‘technology’ or ‘creative industries’. Improve your skills and employability, pitch your ideas Dragons’ Den-style at City Hall, and win one of three £20,000 prize funds to bring your idea to life! Register your interest before midnight on Sunday 17 February.
Activities on campus

Campus Games 2018/19

Organised by the Students' Union, Campus Games is your chance to participate in different activties throughout the year, ranging from the Queen Mary 'Run for Fun' on Saturday 17 November to an indoor triathlon and an old-school sports day. All you need to do is show up and participate to earn points for your school. At the end of the academic year, your school could be the holders of the Campus Games Trophy. The timetable of activties is available at: qmsu.org/campusgames.

Events

Diann Bauer, Queen Mary’s commissioned artist, will be installing her artwork on the Mile End campus between October and December. Diann's work examines ideas from quantum physics and her new installation, projected onto the ArtsTwo Building, will be visible from Mile End Road. The launch will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 24 October, alongside the Visions launch event exploring women’s influence on the development of moving image and film art, hosted by Queen Mary.
