 Getting started

Please take a look at our before you arrive checklist on the new students site to help you plan your arrival at Queen Mary.

We've also produced a guide for parents and guardians with information to help them support you in your transition to university – please forward it on.

 QMUL community

At QMUL, we believe that our diversity is our strength, born from equality and inclusive today.

QMUL was born from the People's Palace, a philanthropic organisation opened by Queen Victoria 130 years ago in 1887. The Palace gave Londoners the opportunities they needed to help them move up in the world and contribute to the public good. We hold true to that commitment in our curriculum today.

You are joining a community of outstanding research, teaching and outreach work. We count among us eight Nobel Prize winners, and breakthroughs by our researchers constantly make the world news. See what some of our recent graduates told us were their favourite things about QMUL.

 Your new home

Capital location in the East End

As one of the world’s most exciting and culturally rich cities, London is a great place to be a student. We are located in the heart of east London, which boasts a diverse, multicultural community and is home to fashionable clubs, cafés, markets, theatres, galleries and parks. Check out the campus and city pages for more information. TimeOut has a great guide for upcoming events in the city and Visit London provides lots of information and advice on exploring the capital.

Accommodation

If you have applied for housing in halls of residence, you’ll soon receive a message from Residential Services and Support regarding your application – if you have been successful, make sure to confirm your offer before the deadline! There are also a number of alternative options available such as private halls and housing. Come along to the find a flatmate event on Tuesday 5 September where you will be able to meet other Queen Mary students and speak to our team of housing advisers. If you're commuting, the Commuters’ Society is a great way to help ensure you make the most of your university experience while living at home.

Campus facilities

All of our campuses have a range of high-quality facilities for students to use. These include recently renovated state-of-the-art library and study spaces, great quality cafés, restaurants and bars, and plenty of health, sport and cultural provisions. You can find out what’s available to you on campus by visiting the facilities at QMUL pages. See what our Mile End campus looks like from the air in our video below.

#QMULTopTen

QMUL students and alumni recently voted in the #QMULTopTen – a range of different categories from their favourite spot on campus to their favourite extracurricular activity. Find out what other students recommend and get some useful tips for when you start.

 Making friends

Buddy Scheme

The Students' Union Buddy Scheme gives you the chance to meet other new students from your course, as well as get tips and advice about university life from current students.

Unibuddy

You can also chat with our current students right now using Unibuddy. Find someone on your course or from your home city and get all your questions answered by those who have been through the same experience as you.

Student profiles and blogs

Check out these student blogs for more advice and tips from current students on what it’s like to study at QMUL. Why not take a look at these student and society profiles too?

 Notice about meningitis

If you haven't already, we advise that you get immunised against meningitis before arriving at QMUL. Young adults are at higher risk from the disease, particularly those coming to university for the first time.
